Literacy

Helen McDonnell:

The idea of using the picture postcards to inspire the children's writing really works well, it fires up their imagination. In literacy the children were on a five-week unit writing stories involving issues and dilemmas. We changed what we were doing slightly to incorporate the ICT/art project. My children are still very reliant on pictures to give them clues to the meaning of what they are reading. Using pictures as a starting point for writing stories encouraged them to use their imaginations a bit more and to experiment. Four unconnected postcards were provided. These were a really good stimulus for original writing. First they had a chance to develop ideas individually responding to one image, then work in mixed ability groups to develop their stories.
