Art and Design

With reference to the Key Stage 2 programme of study in Art in the National Curriculum, England, pupils were given an opportunity to experience a different approach to art using postcard images and their own experience as starting points.

They developed creative, imaginative and practical skills to communicate observations, ideas and feelings about the things important to them in their life.

They recorded observations using the disposable cameras and designed and made images and postcard artefacts.

They improved their visual literacy by developing the ability to look at photographs in detail and began to understand how meanings are constructed and communicated.

They were introduced to and began to investigate, the work of artist/photographers developing knowledge and understanding during a visit to a gallery and later on in school.

They developed a range of basic design skills using ICT media,

They developed their ability to talk about photography using an art and design vocabulary, responding to and evaluating their own and others' work.

The exemplar Scheme of Work for Key Stages 1 and 2 for Art and Design contains a free standing 'generic' unit: 'Visiting a museum, gallery or site', which provides a valuable structure and guidance for a gallery visit.
