Technical information for teachers and parents:

System requirements:

This project is not suitable for iMac computers, due to incompatibility with the Palm Pilot hardware. Each participating school on your project will need the following:

PC using at least Windows 95, with a 9 pin serial (COM) port

2 x Palm Pilots per class with TealPaint software loaded (this can be provided by Whitechapel Art Gallery, please see the section Borrowing palm pilots from Whitechapel Art Gallery for details, or if you already have a Palm Pilot you can download the software from the website by clicking here)

Palm Pilot software loaded on to your PC (provided with Palm Pilot)

TealPaint Image Manager programme loaded onto your computer (available to download from the website by clicking here, and also provided by the Gallery with equipment)

Email application (such as Outlook Express) installed, and an email account. You will also need the email address of each partner school involved in the project.

Printer connected correctly to your computer

Schools and groups can borrow equipment from the Gallery. Equipment must be collected in person from schools and groups within Greater London. We will provide information on how to use the Palm Pilots, how to install the software for Palm Pilots on your computer and how to use the drawing software. Please see the section 'Borrowing palm pilots from the Whitechapel Gallery' for further information, to apply to borrow and eligibility.

Downloading software:

If you already have a palm pilot, you can download the TealPaint software and the TealPaint Image Manager with instructions from the website by clicking here.

Downloading images onto the computer:

Full instructions of how to download the drawings from the Palm Pilot onto your computer are available from the Gallery with any borrowed equipment. It is a good idea to create a separate folder on your desktop to keep your images in before emailing them to your project partner. You should also create a folder for the images you will receive. Information about attaching files to emails is provided by your email help programme.

Naming images:

The young people involved on the project decided to create cryptic names for their drawings, so as not to give away too much information about themselves, encouraging reliance on the drawings when imagining what the other person/group is like. Drawings can be named using the TealPaint Image Manager, provided with borrowed equipment and available from the website by clicking here.

Emailing images:

Images can be sent as 'attachments' and emailed to another email account. Instructions on how to do this are provided by your own email programme. Once received, images can be resized, printed out and manipulated by the recipient.

Printing images:

All images created on the Palm Pilot, whether drawn by you or received over email, can be printed out with a suitable printer attached correctly to your computer. Alternatively, any reprographics printer will be able to enlarge Palm Pilot drawings that you email to them. You might need to provide the drawings as a different kind of file ö check this with the individual printer. Drawings can be enlarged up to any size and should be able to be delivered to you when ready. The company you choose will advise you of their own services.

Borrowing palm pilots from Whitechapel Art Gallery:

Whitechapel Art Gallery has four palm pilots than can be borrowed by teachers of participating schools or groups of young people (headed by a parent or guardian) for up to eight weeks at a time. The equipment must be placed under the insurance of the borrowing institution/individual. Adequate care should be taken to ensure the equipment is returned in the condition it was lent. All cables and software should be returned with the equipment. Equipment should be collected from the Gallery where schools or groups are based within Greater London, but can be sent anywhere in mainland UK for projects being held further away. Equipment is distributed on a first come, first served basis, and is available to teachers who want to use the resource outlined on this website.

Before equipment is released you will need to:
Provide a letter or document from your insurers showing the addition of the equipment (details of the value of the equipment are available form the Gallery)
Sign a receipt for the equipment on collection, or return the receipt by post if equipment is to be sent
Provide the names, addresses, contact numbers and email addresses of participants in your project
Agree to return the equipment in the condition in which it was received and by an agreed date.
Please inspect the equipment before it leaves the Gallery to check it is in working order
Agree to keep the Gallery informed of your project, and contribute where possible to this website's Gallery Pages.
For details of how to do this, please see the Gallery section on this website.

We greatly value the opinions and experiences of teachers, parents and young people who use our resources. Comments enable us to improve our programme and services. We would be very interested in hearing about how the project has been received and handled in other schools; this might be provided in the form of a short write-up or even a telephone conversation with the Education staff at the Gallery.

Please contact the Education Office at Whitechapel Art Gallery to request equipment or if you have any further questions at Education@whitechapel.org
