PAPER
DIARY AND DOWNLOAD
This student developed
two themes in his diary:
THEMES
1. religious
imagery.
He made drawings
in a church, and from religious icons at home.
"My
father goes to a different church than me. My father likes to draw
from statues. So he said to me: "why don't you go to my church and
draw there? So I did. I'm interested in St. Anthony because he was
courageous in fighting the devil even though he got beat up."
| |
"I
like to draw from statues in church, religious figures. St. Anthony
and baby Jesus I sketched in the church then took it home and got
more details from a little statue of it I have at home. Then I did
a big one in ink. I think the little drawing is better. I'm not used
to drawing with ink." |
| |
2. evil monsters
from various sources green image - made up from imagination crab-spider
monster from magazine
monster drawn
from dream
"I've
had this nightmare since I was 5. Now I was able to draw it."
| |
He writes alongside
the images.
"I
do a constant commentary. After I draw, I write."
ELECTRONIC
DIARY
In his net searches
he was looking for 'both background and figure'
Surprises
1. Turner's
storm painting came up unexpectedly. He recognised something and
thought he could use it for a background (conveyed ideas of dark/light,
heaven/hell)
| |
2. Blake image
provided colour idea for worked up drawing (red and orange)
Development
The student
experimented with putting Virgin Mary in front of Toba Khedoori
drawing backround.
"I
wanted a neutral background because it gives you a sense that she's
everywhere." [IMAGE 12]
and with sketches
of St. Anthony on different backgrounds
| |
He worked up
several versions of the monster images
| |
Outcomes
The diary project
seemed to help this student explore his personal interests through
drawing from observation, dream and popular culture images. The
net searches threw up the work of artists for him to consider. This
student plans to make a 'huge religious painting in which good probably
wins over evil.'
