Session 3 - Learning ArtCAM

This session began with the demonstration of the potential of ArtCAM. Starting by drawing a flat two-dimensional shape the software can be used to project three-dimensional form by extending the original shape vertically, giving a flat base, vertical sides and flat top; alternatively the original shape can be extended in a pyramid form; or a curved form. The form produced can be set to any height to suit the material used for manufacture. The software can also produce relief surfaces from patterns, lettering or even photographs. The 3D forms produced have a flat base so that providing they share the same base shape, two forms can be joined to create the fully 3D sculpted form. Once the form is created on screen it can be rendered in a variety of ways to create a realistic virtual 3D model which can be viewed from different angles. This model can then be used to provide the information needed for Computer Aided Manufacture.

Aim for the students:

- To learn how to work with ArtCAM
- To review their 2d sketches in the light of the potential of ArtCAM

Outcome of Lesson:

- initial drawings and rough 3D prototypes in ArtCAM software.

The students picked up on how to use software quite quickly. This showed that the software is manageable and appropriate for this age group and given a suitable demonstration, quite intuitive.
