Adapt - Scheme of Work - The Story of the Project

Download focuses on art practice in the age of digital media and draws on the familiarity and confidence that children and young adults often bring to new technology.

At the gallery, students were introduced to Franz West's work with a particular focus on his Adaptives. In the gallery they explored how adaptives can be interactive and wearable, inviting playful experimentation. They recorded their investigations with digital cameras and more traditional drawing and sketching.

The students' brief would be to design their own small scale adaptive. Using ArtCAM software, they developed initial ideas and sketches into 2D computer drawings which were then extended into 3D relief forms or early CAM prototypes on screen. They then transformed designs into 3D CAD drawings which were set up for the CAM machine to cut and carve out of a sheet material such as Perspex. Students saw the manufacture of their own designs into a final product - an adaptive.
