In the spring of 2000, the Whitechapel Art Gallery was awarded a grant to undertake research and develop a series of downloadable resources for teachers and parents. Entitled 'Download' the project is focused on artistic practice in the age of electronic media and the familiarity and confidence that children and young adults bring to handling instruments of new technology. Educationalist Karen Raney was commissioned to develop the teaching resource for the first two components of the project, and Steve Herne developed the final two components. All four resource files for Download, 'Half-Life', 'Diary', 'Postcards' and 'Adapt' are now available. Download is a unique resource for planning art projects that utilise computers and new technologies.

'Half-Life', developed with artist Simon Faithfull, from the Whitechapel exhibition 'Temporary Accommodation', used palm pilot technology to explore drawing. Children in two Year 5 classes used the palm pilots to make drawings of their school environment which were shared via email with the unknown partner school.
'Diary' was premised on an exploration of diary keeping and the ways in which this might be used in developing creative work. Artist Simon Granger worked with A-level students to create an ongoing collection of visual diaries sourced from the internet, library books and television. The vital resource created through this research was then used to create finished pieces.
'Postcards Home' utilised photography, scanning and digital image manipulation, and was led by artist Laurie Long with pupils from Poole's Park primary school in Islington. Based on the production of a postcard featuring a personal object, students were exploring their own and other's identities whilst developing their technology skills in creative ways.
'Adapt' the fourth and final component of Download took place Swanlea secondary school in the Information technology department and features the creative use of computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) technology. It was led by artist Katharine Willis with one year 10 IT class.
