Sam Perry is a sculptor who is fascinated with cities, buildings and forgotten spaces. Her work takes the form of mazes or labyrinths inspired by the journeys we take through the cities we live in. Sam takes the idea of a city and divides it into layers; the subterranean or underground layers of subways or tubes. The busy ever-changing street level and the forgotten roof top level. This roof top level is the most fascinating with empty towers and architectural follies and it is this level that inspired the urban residual series. Constructed towers in wood that stick out of the wall. These ominous and forgotten towers seem to watch us they remind us of the cities history and the emptiness we can sometimes feel in the urban environment.
Along side Sam's own studio work she also works in gallery education. Sam has led courses and classes on drawing and sculpture at many leading art galleries including Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Camden Arts Centre, The South London Gallery, The V&A and the Museum of London.
